Beaches in northeast Mallorca

You will find beautiful beaches only 10 to 15 minutes away from Artà. In Colonia de Sant Pere, there is a superb local beach which is elevated and protected by breakwaters. Or take a short drive to Son Serra de Marina, where a long sandy beach and a beautiful beach bar invite you to sunbathe and swim. The sandy beaches of Cala Torta and Cala Mitjana are located amid the mountainous landscape of the Sierra de Llevant. Windy days bring quite high waves, and you should always pay attention to the current here. Beaches such as Cala Font Celada or Playa de S’Arenalet can only be reached via several kilometres of hiking trails, but the treat of experiencing nature along the way is all the greater. The beaches of Cala Mesquida, Cala Agulla, Cala Ratjada, and Son Moll are flatter beaches. They are guarded and offer beach bars and umbrella rental, and are ideal for water sports. The sandy beach of Canymel is surrounded by green mountains, yet is located directly in town. The range of available services leaves nothing to be desired. When the wind blows, the waves here are nice and high. The guarded sandy beach of Sa Marjal, which is separated by dunes from the seldom used road, features is a wonderful swell and a beach bar, which is so inviting for relaxing in the evening.

Four golf courses can be reached within a maximum of 15 minutes’ drive from Artà.

Golf variety galore

Capdepera Golf

Capdepera Golf is the closest golf course to Casa Bella Mirada. The challenging course, characterised by rolling fairways and partly narrow fairways, has a special layout and a very special charm owing to the six lakes on the round.

Pula Golf Resort

The Pula Golf Resort has hosted many major tournaments. The level of difficulty of the course is correspondingly medium to high.

Golf Son Servera

Golf Son Servera is the second oldest golf course in Mallorca. Its fairways lead through park-like landscapes which are slightly hilly with water hazards. Golf Son Servera is still one of the most interesting courses on the island.

Canyamel Golf

The Canyamel Golf Course, which extends over a small valley, is suitable for all levels of play. Have an exciting view of the sea during your round.

Cycling uphill and downhill

Northeast Mallorca is a great place to start a cycling tour. Mountain bikers and road cyclists will find suitable routes in this region. The highlights include tours through the Parc Natural de la Peninsula de Llevant and tours to area beaches. Some of these routes require an advanced cycling style. Road cyclists can tour from the north coast to the east coast, inland, and back. It is definitely true that altitude metres have to be overcome. After all, the hills and mountains in the northeast of Mallorca are the low mountain range of the island.

Great hiking routes around Artà

Hike to your heart’s content

Drive a car only ten minutes from Artà and you will find yourself at the parking lot of the Parc Natural de la Peninsula de Llevant. The parking lot is the trailhead of 13 hiking trails of different lengths (550 m to 6.5 km) and difficulties through barren hills, rugged rocks, low scrubland, and sparse woods to lonely sandy beaches. There is a large information board in the parking lot. All hiking trails are very well signposted. Two hikes that start from Cala Mesuida are also quite beautiful. First, there is the long tour to Torre d’Albarca, which takes about five hours. This is a scenically impressive coastal hike on narrow, partly rocky paths. The way back takes you on gravel roads further inland. The shorter hike leads to Cala Torta, a beautiful bay with a sandy beach. For a fabulous and long tour, go from the town of Beltlem up to Ermita de Betlem. Once you have arrived at the top, there is a worthwhile side track to a magnificent lookout far above the Bay of Alcùdia. If you wish to go a bit higher, climb up to Bec de Ferrutx. A look at the tour suggestions from www.mallorca-erleben.info is worthwhile and makes you want to lace up your hiking boots right away.

Culture in and around Artà

Cultural highlights

The town of Artà itself, with its small and steep allyways and the San Salvador pilgrimage church at the highest point of the town, is already a sight to behold. Artà is also home to a regional museum, the municipal theatre, the library worth seeing and – not to forget – the Talayot settlement of Ses Paisses and the Ermita de Betlem. The neighbouring municipality of Capdepera offers interesting insight into the history of Mallorca with its 700-year-old castle and fortress Castell de Capdepera. Spelunkers have several options and can visit the Coves del Drac (Dragon Caves) near Porto Cristo or the imposing stalactite cave Coves d’Artà above the bay of Canyamel. While you are already in the area, you can also visit the massive, well-preserved Torre de Canyamel watchtower from the thirteenth century. A side trip to Manacor, the furniture and pearl city of Mallorca, is also well worth the visit. In Manacor, the second largest city on the island, you can see not only a beautiful parish church and a museum on the history of the city, but also many small streets, alleyways, and squares waiting to be discovered. And then there is the church without a roof – the unfinished church of Son Servera, where only the outer walls, windows, and rosettes were finished. Today, the church is used for open-air cultural events.
